A Local's Perspective
From Nutfield's Potato Fields to Robert Frost's Farm
Derry's land was part of the 1719 Nutfield settlement, founded by Scots-Irish Presbyterian immigrants who also settled neighboring Londonderry and Windham — and it was here, in the town's common field, that the first potato in what became the United States is said to have been planted. Derry itself wasn't incorporated as a separate town until 1827, when it split off from the eastern portion of Londonderry.
The town's best-known chapter belongs to poet Robert Frost, who farmed on Derry's Ridge Road from 1900 to 1911 — the working farmhouse survives today as the Robert Frost Farm State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark, and Frost later credited those Derry years as the source of much of his early poetry. Derry also produced astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, and is home to Pinkerton Academy, an independently incorporated academy founded in 1814 that has served as the town's de facto public high school for more than two centuries — an unusual arrangement that also serves several surrounding towns.
Today Derry is one of New Hampshire's larger municipalities, with a 2020 Census population of 34,317 across 36.3 square miles, split between a compact downtown at the junction of Routes 102 and 28 and the historic East Derry village (its own National Register district) about two miles east. Zillow puts the town's average home value at roughly $437K as of mid-2026 (up about 4.1% year-over-year), while Redfin reports a $463K median sale price over the three months ending May 2026 — up 2.9% year-over-year — with homes typically selling in about 28 days, consistent with the tight, competitive conditions Bentley's has tracked across other Southern NH and Greater Newburyport towns.
