5 Common Issues That Make Your House Seem Haunted
October 9, 2026
The five common issues that make a house seem haunted are flickering lights, creaking floors and stairs, cold spots, doors that open or close on their own, and scratching or bumping in the walls. Each has an everyday explanation, from loose wiring and settling to missing insulation and pests, and each has a fix.
We are Bentley's Real Estate in Newburyport. We run into these quirks in older properties every season, and below is how we sort them out.
The five spooky signs at a glance
| Spooky sign | What you notice | Usual culprit | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flickering lights | Bulbs dim or blink at random | Loose bulbs, outdated fixtures, overloaded circuits, faulty wiring | Tighten bulbs, check wattage, call a licensed electrician |
| Creaking floors and stairs | Footstep sounds after dark | Humidity changes, settling, loose subfloors | Carpenter, joist bridging, secure loose boards |
| Chilly pockets | One room runs colder | Missing or damaged insulation, gaps around windows and doors | Add insulation, caulk, weatherstripping |
| Self-moving doors | A door creaks open or swings shut | Settling leaves frames out of plumb | Carpenter realigns the hinges |
| Scratching or knocking | Tapping, scurrying, thumping | Pests, or pipes and wood expanding and contracting | Pest control, seal entry points, plumber |
When two or three show up together, we treat them as one message from the building.
In our experience, that message most often starts at the light switch.
1. Flickering lights
Flickering lights point to an electrical problem far more often than to ghosts or paranormal activity. A loose bulb, the wrong wattage, an outdated fixture, a faulty switch or an overloaded circuit can all set off the blinking.
Older properties were not always wired to modern standards. Some still have knob and tube wiring that can loosen or get damaged over the years.
Go the do-it-yourself route when a single bulb flickers: tighten it and confirm the wattage matches.
Call a licensed electrician when the flickering keeps going or several fixtures on one circuit flicker together.
That is, electrical problems are the one "haunting" that can turn dangerous, so leave those to a pro.
Note when it happens. If it lines up with the furnace or washer kicking on, that pattern points an electrician to the cause faster.
2. Creaking floors and stairs
Once the wiring checks out, look underfoot for the next late-night culprit. Seems like a spirit walking, right?
Creaking floors after dark mean the structure is moving. Humidity and winter air make the wood beneath your boards expand and contract with the seasons.
Settling can mimic footsteps, and a subfloor with loosened screws or nails creaks every time someone steps on it.
| Leave it for now if | Fix it now if |
|---|---|
| The creaks are seasonal and quiet down by themselves | The noise is persistent or getting worse |
| You are staying put and it does not bother you | You plan to sell, since buyers notice creaks at showings |
A carpenter or handyman can secure loose boards. Joist bridging stops joists from twisting, which is a frequent source of more creaks.
3. Cold spots and drafts
The same seasonal swings that make wood groan also expose the gaps in a building's envelope. A cold spot in one room means outside air is getting in, whatever the ghost stories say.
Insulation may be missing, damaged or poorly installed, and cracks around windows, doors and siding let winter air through. You will find these chilly pockets most often in older, multilevel properties.
Adding insulation in the attic or walls and sealing gaps with caulk or weatherstripping solves most of them. If one room stays colder than the rest, have the heating system checked too, since blocked vents and leaky ductwork produce the same eerie chill.
4. Doors that open or close on their own
Settling has one more trick that unnerves people. A door that swings open or shut by itself?
In most cases, settling. Over the years, frames can become unlevel and out of plumb, and the door's own weight moves it.
A qualified carpenter can realign the hinges. If several doors start to stick or swing, mention it to a home inspector, because it may signal more settling worth a closer look.
5. Scratching, tapping and bumping noises in the walls
A swinging door unsettles people, and scratching inside the plaster after dark rattles them even more. Case in point: scratching and scurrying usually mean animals have found a way in.
Rats, squirrels and even raccoons slip through openings in crawl spaces and attics, specifically once the weather turns cold. Pipes and wood also expand and contract and can knock or tap behind the drywall.
| Sound | Likely source | Who to call |
|---|---|---|
| Scratching, scurrying | Rodents or other animals | Pest or animal control |
| Knocking pipes | Water pressure, expanding pipes | Plumber, water hammer arrestor |
| Dripping or hissing | Hidden leak | Plumber right away |
| Buzzing or ringing | Loose wiring | Electrician |
Critters create bigger problems by damaging insulation and wiring, so act right away.
Seal entry points, keep garbage cans tidy and store pet food and birdseed in gnaw-proof containers.

All five of these fixes get more urgent the moment a listing goes live, because buyers notice what owners stopped hearing years ago. During showings and the home inspection, blinking bulbs, drafts and scratching overhead make buyers wonder what else is wrong.
